Sudha Murty, a renowned author, philanthropist, and now Rajya Sabha MP, has recalled the challenges she faced when she decided to pursue an engineering degree. In a podcast with Mukesh Bansal, Murty revealed that people thought it was unconventional for a woman to pursue engineering and some even thought there was something wrong with her brain. Despite the criticism, Murty completed her degree and went on to become the first female engineer to be hired at Tata Engineering and Locomotive Company (TELCO).
Murty’s decision to pursue engineering was met with disbelief and discouragement from her family and community. Her grandmother warned her that she would not find a husband if she pursued engineering, while her mother suggested she become a mathematics professor instead. Despite the challenges, Murty’s father supported her unconditionally. She completed her BEng in Electrical and Electronics Engineering and her MEng in Computer Science from Indian Institute of Science.
Murty’s story is an inspiration to women who face challenges and discouragement in pursuing their dreams. She proved that with hard work and determination, anything is possible.
