Google has launched a major artificial intelligence (AI) initiative in India, focusing on healthcare, waste management, and agriculture. This effort aims to tackle critical societal challenges and make AI tangible for businesses, individuals, and communities. At a recent press event in Bengaluru, Google outlined its plans to support millions of diabetic retinopathy screenings, improve waste management, and optimize farm productivity.
In healthcare, Google partners with Forus Health and AuroLab to scale AI-driven screenings for diabetic retinopathy, aiming to deliver 6 million no-cost screenings in India and Thailand over the next decade. This initiative seeks to provide early intervention for patients in resource-constrained communities. The AI model has already supported over 600,000 screenings worldwide.
Google is also collaborating with Saahas Zero Waste to deploy its CircularNet AI model, improving plastic waste sorting and recycling. Additionally, the company is opening its Agricultural Landscape Understanding (ALU) API to developers, enabling them to provide farm-level insights across India using remote sensing data. These initiatives demonstrate Google’s commitment to harnessing AI to drive progress in critical areas and create a more sustainable future for India.
