Zomato CEO Defends Food Safety Record Amid Mushroom Labelling Issue

  • Zomato’s Hyperpure warehouse in Hyderabad found with mushroom packets labelled with future packing dates.
  • CEO Deepinder Goyal attributes error to vendor mistake, emphasizes stringent quality control measures.
  • FSSAI inspection finds hygiene issues, but facility receives A+ rating, highest in FSSAI’s system.

Zomato CEO Deepinder Goyal has addressed concerns over a food safety issue at the company’s Hyperpure warehouse in Hyderabad. A batch of mushroom packets was found with future packing dates, but Goyal clarified that this was a vendor error.
The issue involved 90 packets of button mushrooms, which were incorrectly labelled due to a manual typing error by the vendor. Zomato’s quality control team identified the error, and the vendor was subsequently removed from the database. Despite this incident, the Hyperpure facility received an A+ rating from the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI).
Goyal expressed frustration over media focus on the isolated incident, suggesting bias against big businesses. This incident follows an earlier inspection at a Blinkit warehouse, also operated by Zomato, where expired items were found. Zomato has committed to enhancing protocols to avoid future problems.
The company’s leadership emphasizes its commitment to food safety standards, with tech-driven quality checks in place to prevent customer exposure to such errors. However, the FSSAI inspection also noted hygiene issues, including house flies and inadequate insect-proofing.
