Indian wrestler Vinesh Phogat announced her retirement from the sport on Thursday, following a disheartening disqualification from the Paris Olympics. Phogat was disqualified from the 50 kg freestyle final for exceeding the weight limit by 100 grams. In a poignant farewell message, she expressed her deep sadness and gratitude to her supporters.
Phogat had appealed to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) for a joint silver medal, with the verdict expected on Thursday. If the ruling is in her favor, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) will be required to award her the joint silver medal. Despite her disqualification, Phogat made history by becoming the first Indian woman to reach the final of an Olympic wrestling event. Her retirement concludes a distinguished career that began in 2001.
