The decision strikes a balance between security and user convenience.
The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has announced a new regulation to combat mobile phone fraud. As of July 1, 2024, a 7-day waiting period will be mandatory for mobile number portability (MNP) after a SIM swap or replacement. This decision aims to prevent fraudulent activities involving SIM card manipulation, such as porting mobile numbers without the user’s knowledge.
Previously, a 10-day waiting period was in place, but TRAI has reduced it to 7 days to strike a balance between security and user convenience. The new rule introduces an additional criterion for rejecting requests for a Unique Porting Code (UPC), essential for MNP. The regulator has decided to keep a waiting period of 7 days after the SIM swap or replacement for a mobile number to become eligible for porting.
This decision follows deliberations with various stakeholders, and TRAI believes it will help curb fraudulent activities while minimizing inconvenience to mobile subscribers. The new regulation is part of TRAI’s efforts to strengthen telecommunication regulations and protect mobile users from fraud.
