Swiggy, a leading online food and grocery delivery platform, has launched its own UPI payment service within the app. This move is aimed at reducing the platform’s dependence on external payment apps and providing a seamless checkout experience for customers. The service is launched in partnership with Yes Bank and Juspay using the UPI Plugin, a product launched by National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) in 2022.
The in-app UPI payment service will allow customers to make payments directly using their Swiggy UPI account, eliminating the need to redirect to other apps like Google Pay, Paytm, or PhonePe. This will not only simplify the checkout process but also reduce payment downtime, especially during rush hours. The service is currently being rolled out in phases and will be available to all users in the coming months.
The launch of Swiggy’s in-app UPI payment service is part of a larger trend of internet firms seeking to have in-house UPI access to reduce dependence on external payment apps. This move also aligns with NPCI’s efforts to bring more players into the UPI ecosystem and reduce the dominance of a few selected players like Google Pay and PhonePe.
