NASA is addressing a spacesuit compatibility issue for astronauts Sunita Williams and Butch Wilmore’s safe return to Earth on SpaceX’s Crew Dragon spacecraft. Currently, only one SpaceX spacesuit is available on the International Space Station (ISS), which fits Sunita Williams. However, Butch Wilmore’s suit will arrive on Crew-9, causing a temporary issue.
The issue arises because Boeing spacesuits, worn by the astronauts during launch and their trip to the ISS, are not compatible with SpaceX spacecraft. NASA commercial crew manager Steve Stich explained that each contractor designed their own suits and interfaces, leading to the compatibility issue.
Despite the delay, NASA is ensuring the astronauts’ safe return and has a comprehensive support system in place for their families during long-duration missions. The agency provides behavioral health resources, regular updates, and involvement in key mission events to support the astronauts and their families.
