  • Layoffs mainly affected redundant leadership roles.

Meta, the parent company of Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp, has announced a major restructuring of its hardware division, Reality Labs. This restructuring consolidates Reality Labs into two primary groups: Metaverse and Wearables. The Metaverse group will handle the Quest headset line and Horizon, while the Wearables group will focus on Meta’s other hardware efforts, including the smart glasses collaboration with Ray-Ban.

The restructuring has led to some layoffs, mostly affecting redundant leadership roles. According to an internal memo by Meta CTO Andrew “Boz” Bosworth, the reorganization aims to streamline operations and emphasize Meta’s commitment to augmented reality (AR) and the Metaverse. Bosworth highlighted the success of Ray-Ban Meta glasses and emphasized the company’s dedication to developing AR products.

This move is seen as a necessary step to make Reality Labs more efficient. By consolidating leadership and reducing overhead, Meta aims to better serve its customers and accelerate the development of its AR and Metaverse technologies. The company plans to unveil more details about upcoming AR glasses later this year, with the next generation of Ray-Ban glasses expected next year.
