  • Google signs historic deal with Kairos Power to purchase power from small modular nuclear reactors (SMRs) for its AI systems.
  • The partnership aims to bring the first SMR online by 2030, with six to seven reactors planned by 2035, providing 500 megawatts of power.
  • Google seeks reliable, clean energy for its AI infrastructure, joining other tech companies exploring nuclear power to meet surging energy demands.

Google has made a groundbreaking move to meet its growing energy needs by partnering with Kairos Power to harness nuclear power from small modular reactors (SMRs). This innovative deal marks the world’s first corporate agreement to purchase power from multiple SMRs. Google will acquire 500 megawatts of power from six to seven reactors, expected to come online between 2030 and 2035.
The partnership aims to provide reliable, clean energy for Google’s artificial intelligence (AI) infrastructure, which demands a steady power supply. Google joins other tech giants, such as Amazon and Microsoft, in exploring nuclear power to address surging energy needs. According to Goldman Sachs, US data center power consumption is projected to triple by 2030, requiring approximately 47 gigawatts of new generation capacity.
Kairos Power’s SMR technology utilizes a molten salt cooling system and ceramic pebble fuel to generate power. The company is taking a step-by-step approach, testing its technology through hardware demonstrations before building its first commercial reactor. Google’s commitment to an “order book framework” signals long-term support for the SMR technology, improving project delivery prospects.
