OpenAI, the company behind ChatGPT, is thinking about cutting the price of its ChatGPT Plus subscription in India from $20 (about Rs 1,720) a month to just a few dollars. This news comes from a report by The Information, which says OpenAI wants to make its AI tool more affordable for people in India. Right now, the basic version of ChatGPT is free, but the Plus version, with smarter features like GPT-4.5, costs money. A cheaper price could let more Indians use it, especially since India is already OpenAI’s second-biggest market, growing three times bigger last year, according to CEO Sam Altman.

OpenAI and Meta are also talking with Reliance Industries, a huge Indian company run by Mukesh Ambani, about teaming up. The plan might see Reliance Jio, their telecom arm, sharing ChatGPT with millions of users. Reliance could also sell OpenAI’s tech to businesses through an API, a tool that lets companies add AI to their own systems. Plus, they’re looking at running OpenAI and Meta’s AI models in India itself, keeping data inside the country to follow strict privacy rules—an important move for businesses worried about where their info goes.

To make this work, Reliance is planning a massive three-gigawatt data center in Jamnagar, Gujarat, which could be the world’s biggest. This center would power up AI tools like ChatGPT locally, making them faster and safer for Indian users. These talks show how much big tech companies want to grow in India’s fast-moving digital world, using Reliance’s wide reach in telecom and retail. While nothing’s set yet—and Meta hasn’t commented—this could bring smarter, cheaper AI to more people in India soon.
