The Karnataka government has taken a significant step towards building Bengaluru’s second airport. On August 5, consultants Boston Consulting Group (BCG) and iDeCK presented detailed plans to deputy CM DK Shivakumar and other officials. The proposed airport will have an annual passenger capacity of 100 million and will be built on 4,000-5,000 acres of land.
The government has identified seven potential locations, including Harohalli and Dobbaspet, which are considered the frontrunners. The final decision will be based on factors such as passenger density, connectivity, industrial growth, and environmental considerations. The government plans to submit a proposal to the Airports Authority of India (AAI) and aims to make the airport operational by 2035.
This development comes as Kempegowda International Airport is expected to reach its capacity soon. The government aims to accelerate the process to ensure that Bengaluru doesn’t lose its opportunity to become a major aviation hub. With the proposed airport, Bengaluru is set to become one of the few cities in India with multiple international airports.
