The government has given a significant boost to its flagship health scheme, Ayushman Bharat, by allocating Rs 7,300 crore in the Union Budget for FY25. This is an increase from the Rs 6,800 crore spent on the Pradhan Mantri Jan Aarogya Yojana in FY24. The scheme provides cashless and paperless insurance cover of Rs 5 lakh per annum per family in empanelled hospitals.
The scheme has seen a significant growth of 27.7% between FY19 and FY24, with 68.6 million hospital admissions so far. The PM-JAY dashboard shows that 1.9 million admissions took place in the previous 30 days alone. Southern states have been the biggest beneficiaries of the scheme, with Tamil Nadu topping the list with 9 million admissions, followed by Karnataka with 6.6 million.
The increased allocation to Ayushman Bharat is part of the government’s overall boost to health spending, with Rs 90,958 crore allocated to the programme in the budget. However, health spending as a share of GDP remains unchanged at 0.3%, indicating that there is still much work to be done to improve healthcare outcomes in the country.
