The government is likely to increase funding for Digital Public Infrastructure (DPI) in the upcoming union budget, building on the success of initiatives like Aadhaar and UPI. The Economic Survey highlighted the significant role of DPIs in India’s digital transformation, providing citizen-centric and transparent governance services.
DPIs have also enabled efficient subsidy transfers through Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT), preventing leakage of government resources to corruption. Furthermore, many billion-dollar startups have been built on top of DPIs, attracting foreign direct investment to the country.
The government is also promoting the establishment of DPIs in other friendly emerging economies, offering technology transfer and goodwill. The National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) has been assisting countries like Namibia and Peru in setting up digital payment infrastructure, enabling them to build UPI-like real-time payment systems.
