  • Workers demand recognition of Samsung India Workers Union (SIWU) led by Centre of Indian Trade Unions (CITU).
  • CITU urges Tamil Nadu Chief Minister to intervene, uphold workers’ right to unionize.

The strike by Samsung Electronics workers in Tamil Nadu has entered its second month, with labour leaders emphasizing the need for recognition of the newly-formed Samsung India Workers Union (SIWU). The workers, led by the Centre of Indian Trade Unions (CITU), have been demanding registration and recognition of their union, alongside other economic demands.
The strike began on September 7, with over 1,000 workers participating. Despite Samsung management agreeing to higher pay, the company has refused to recognize the workers’ union. The workers have rejected a settlement offer, citing the lack of union recognition. CITU Secretary KC Gopikumar stressed that forming a trade union is an essential right of workers and can be led by outsider leaders.
The Tamil Nadu government has not processed the union registration request, and the workers have filed a case in the Madras High Court. The government awaits the court’s order. The strike may impact India’s attractiveness for investment, but government sources consider it a one-off incident.
