Microsoft has launched Phi-3-mini, a cost-effective and lightweight artificial intelligence model designed to cater to a broader clientele. This move reflects Microsoft’s strategic efforts to democratise AI technology and make it more accessible to businesses of all sizes.

Phi-3-mini, the first release among a trio of small language models (SLMs) by Microsoft, offers significant cost advantages compared to its competitors. Sébastien Bubeck, Microsoft’s vice president of GenAI research, highlighted Phi-3-mini’s dramatic cost reduction, making it up to tenfold cheaper than comparable models with similar capabilities.

Targeted at handling simpler tasks, Phi-3-mini provides practical solutions tailored for companies operating with limited resources. It is readily available on Microsoft’s Azure cloud service platform, as well as on machine learning model platforms like Hugging Face and Ollama. Additionally, the model is optimised for Nvidia GPUs and integrated with Nvidia’s software tool Nvidia Inference Microservices (NIM), further enhancing its accessibility and performance.
