The Indian government has taken a significant step to curb the menace of spam messages on messaging services. The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has introduced stricter regulations, effective from September 1, 2024, to prevent the misuse of messaging services. Access providers are now prohibited from transmitting messages containing un-whitelisted URLs, APKs, OTT links, or callback numbers.
Additionally, message traceability is mandated from November 1, 2024, to ensure that all messages can be traced from sender to recipient. Any message with an undefined or mismatched telemarketer chain will be rejected. The government has also introduced punitive measures for non-compliance, including blacklisting and suspension of services. Delivery telemarketers are required to identify and report entities responsible for misuse within two business days or face similar consequences.
These measures are a significant step towards combating spam and fraudulent activities on messaging services in India. The government’s commitment to enforcing compliance and taking strict action against non-compliance is a welcome move. With these regulations, consumers can expect a significant reduction in spam messages and a safer messaging experience.
