Apple has been testing a ChatGPT-integrated version of Siri for iOS 18, in collaboration with OpenAI. This partnership began last year after Apple employees met with OpenAI CEO Sam Altman at WWDC in June, agreeing to use OpenAI’s APIs for internal testing.

The integration of ChatGPT into Siri is expected to enhance Siri’s ability to process complex queries and understand context more accurately. Evidence of this testing was found in the beta version of iOS 17.4, which included a new Siri summarization framework that utilizes OpenAI’s ChatGPT API.

While this development is exciting for Apple users, it has raised concerns for Microsoft. Since OpenAI relies heavily on Microsoft for its servers, the influx of Apple users could strain Microsoft’s data centers. Despite this, Apple is moving forward with its AI plans and is expected to announce these new features at WWDC 2024 on June 10.

In addition to ChatGPT integration, Apple is exploring other AI features like transcribing voice memos and auto-generating emojis. Although Apple has a deal with OpenAI, it is also considering Google’s ‘Gemini’ AI model as an option, while continuing to develop its own Ajax AI model for on-device text analysis and smart replies.
