The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has made progress in reducing spam calls, with consumer complaints dropping by 20% from August to October 2024. TRAI’s strict measures, including disconnecting over 2.75 lakh phone numbers and blacklisting 50 entities, have contributed to the decline. However, robocalls are on the rise, creating new challenges.

A survey by LocalCircles, covering over 14,000 users, found that while 27% noticed fewer spam calls, only 9% reported a significant reduction. Many respondents highlighted a noticeable increase in robocalls, suggesting that telemarketers are now using automated systems to bypass TRAI’s regulations.

Telecom companies like Bharti Airtel are stepping up with AI-based tools to detect spam in real-time, aiming to counter the rise in robocalls. While TRAI’s efforts are beginning to show results, experts stress the need for continued enforcement and innovative solutions to address these evolving tactics.
