Amazon CEO Andy Jassy addressed employee concerns about the company’s return-to-office (RTO) mandate, dismissing claims it’s a tactic for “quiet firing.” Jassy emphasized that the policy aims to strengthen Amazon’s culture, not cut costs. The RTO mandate requires corporate employees to work on-site five days a week starting January 2024.
Jassy acknowledged some employees’ dissatisfaction, with over 500 signing an internal petition protesting the RTO mandate. However, Amazon Web Services CEO Matt Garman reported that most employees support the change. Jassy reiterated the importance of in-person collaboration in driving innovation and adaptability in the tech industry.
To enhance operational efficiency, Amazon will reduce management layers by 15% by early 2025. The company also introduced a “Bureaucracy Mailbox” to solicit employee suggestions on streamlining processes. Jassy emphasized Amazon’s commitment to a dynamic, non-political work environment.
