  • India currently relies on China for display products, making it essential to develop local manufacturing.
  • Industry experts believe India could establish display manufacturing facilities in the next 3-4 years.

India is focusing on boosting its semiconductor industry, but experts believe that display manufacturing needs similar attention. Despite being the world’s third-largest consumer of display products, India relies heavily on China for its display needs. This dependency highlights the urgency for India to establish its own display manufacturing industry.

The global display market is expected to reach $187.8 billion in 2023, with growing demand for OLED panels in various sectors. However, most display manufacturing is concentrated in countries like China, Japan, South Korea, and Taiwan. To reduce reliance on imports, India must invest in display manufacturing capabilities.

Vedanta Group, for instance, has applied for a display fab under India’s semiconductor and display fabrication scheme. Their acquisition of Tokyo-based AvanStrate Inc positions them well to establish an integrated fab for display glass and panels. Industry experts are optimistic that India could see the establishment of display manufacturing facilities within the next 3-4 years.

With supportive policies and strategic investments, India can significantly enhance its electronics manufacturing capabilities. Developing a local display manufacturing industry will reduce dependency on imports and support the vision of Atmanirbhar Bharat, making India a key player in the high-tech industry.
