  • India plans to acquire 10,000 GPUs within 18 months to enhance its AI capabilities.
  • The country generates 20% of the world’s data and has the second-highest number of GitHub AI projects globally.
  • India leads the Asia Pacific region (excluding China) in data centre capacity and plans to double its capacity by 2026.

India is set to significantly boost its AI development by acquiring 10,000 GPUs over the next 18 months, according to former Niti Ayog CEO Amitabh Kant. This move aims to align India’s computational power with its massive data generation, which accounts for 20% of the world’s total data. Additionally, India ranks second globally in the number of AI projects hosted on GitHub, highlighting its active participation in the AI sector.

The country’s data centre capacity, already the highest in the Asia Pacific region (excluding China), is expected to double by 2026. A recent report predicts a rise from 0.9 GW in 2023 to 2 GW by 2026, requiring significant investment. Despite having over 100 generative AI startups, India’s investment in AI is relatively low compared to the US and China. This GPU acquisition is a crucial step in bolstering India’s AI infrastructure and competitiveness on the global stage.
