  • A woman accidentally discarded her ex-boyfriend’s hard drive containing 8,000 Bitcoins.
  • James Howells is suing Newport Council to recover the lost cryptocurrency.
  • The hard drive is buried under 100,000 tonnes of landfill waste.

Halfina Eddy-Evans, the ex-partner of James Howells, has admitted to throwing away the hard drive that holds the digital key to his ₹5,900 crore Bitcoin fortune. Eddy-Evans claims she unknowingly discarded the drive at his request during a cleanup nearly a decade ago. The drive, containing 8,000 Bitcoins mined in 2009, is now buried under 100,000 tonnes of waste at a Newport, Wales landfill.

Howells is fighting a legal battle against Newport City Council, accusing them of blocking his efforts to excavate the landfill and recover the hard drive. The council cites environmental concerns, saying such an operation would cause significant harm. Despite this, Howells has vowed to continue his search and has pledged to donate 10% of the fortune to improve Newport’s infrastructure if successful.

Eddy-Evans, who has been drawn into the spotlight, expressed her hopes for Howells’ success but said she doesn’t want any of the money. She added that the ongoing obsession isn’t helping his mental health. With a court hearing set for December, Howells’ search for his lost treasure remains unresolved.
