Wolverine Packing Co., based in Detroit, has recalled approximately 167,277 pounds of ground beef following concerns of E. coli contamination. The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) issued the alert after illnesses were reported.

The recall was triggered when the Minnesota Department of Agriculture linked several cases of E. coli to the consumption of ground beef. The FSIS confirmed 15 illnesses between Nov. 2 and Nov. 10. Fresh products had a use-by date of Nov. 14, while frozen items were produced on Oct. 22. Affected packages can be identified by the mark “EST. 2574B” inside the USDA inspection seal.

The products were distributed to restaurants nationwide, and FSIS warns that some contaminated beef might still be stored in refrigerators or freezers. They advise restaurants to discard or return these items to the supplier. Serving the recalled products could pose a significant health risk.

Consumers and food establishments are urged to check their supplies and ensure the affected products are not used. This recall emphasizes the importance of food safety and vigilance in preventing contamination-related illnesses.
