NASA astronaut Sunita Williams has assumed command of the International Space Station Expedition 72, marking her second tenure as ISS commander after a 12-year gap. During the change of command ceremony, Williams praised outgoing commander Oleg Kononenko for his adaptability and leadership.
Kononenko, along with NASA astronaut Tracy C. Dyson and cosmonaut Nikolai Chub, will return to Earth on September 23. Williams bid farewell to the departing crew members, acknowledging their contributions to the ISS mission. Williams and fellow astronaut Butch Wilmore, who arrived at the ISS on June 6, will remain on board until February 2025.
The SpaceX Crew-9 mission, launching on September 26, will bring NASA astronaut Nick Hague and Roscosmos cosmonaut Aleksandr Gorbunov to the ISS. They will join Williams and Wilmore for a 5-month stay, conducting over 200 science and research demonstrations. Williams’ extended stay results from the faulty Boeing Starliner, which initially aimed to return her and Wilmore to Earth earlier.
Williams’ leadership and experience will guide the ISS Expedition 72 crew through various scientific experiments and space station operations. Her command underscores NASA’s continued commitment to space exploration and international cooperation.
