NASA astronaut Sunita Williams, of Indian origin, and fellow astronaut Butch Wilmore are currently stranded in space due to technical issues with Boeing’s Starliner. Initially planned as a week-long mission, the delay has surpassed 60 days, causing concerns about the astronauts’ safety.
Despite the uncertainty, Williams’ husband, Michael, remains optimistic, saying that space is her “happy place.” The astronauts are keeping busy with scientific investigations, maintenance, public outreach, and exercise to prevent muscle and bone loss. They also have regular contact with family members through calls and emails.
The space station has a four-month supply of food and other essentials, with additional supplies delivered via an uncrewed Northrop Grumman cargo ship. NASA officials assure that the astronauts are not stranded and can return to Earth on Starliner in case of an emergency. However, the return date remains uncertain, with possibilities extending to 2025.
