SpaceX’s Polaris Dawn mission has successfully launched, carrying four civilians on a historic journey to conduct the first-ever commercial spacewalk. The privately-funded mission, operated by SpaceX on behalf of CEO Jared Isaacman, aims to explore Earth’s Van Allen radiation belts and push the boundaries of commercial spaceflight.
During their 5-day journey, the crew will conduct over 30 scientific experiments, including studying the effects of space radiation on the human body. They will also test Starlink’s laser-based communications system in space, paving the way for future space exploration.
The spacewalk, scheduled for the third day of the mission, will see two crew members venture outside the spacecraft wearing SpaceX-designed spacesuits. This historic event marks a significant milestone in commercial spaceflight, with the crew reaching distances farther from Earth than humans have been in over half a century.
