The issue of union recognition remains unresolved, with the government supporting the union’s registration request and awaiting a court decision.
The 37-day labour strike at Samsung Electronics’ Sriperumbudur unit has come to an end following extensive discussions with the Tamil Nadu government and management ¹. The agreement reached includes a confirmed wage increase, assurance of no punitive measures against striking employees, and a commitment from workers to refrain from any preemptive actions. The strike, led by the Centre of Indian Trade Unions (CITU), began on September 9, pressing for various demands including pay revision and recognition of the newly formed Samsung India Workers Union [2).
The workers had sought intervention from the Madras High Court to address the delay in processing their union registration request. The government has indicated that it will await the court’s decision on this matter ¹. With the strike called off, all employees are set to resume work without any repercussions. Samsung India welcomed CITU’s decision to call off the strike, thanking the Tamil Nadu government for its support ².
The strike highlighted the workers’ concerns over wages, working conditions, and union recognition. The company had previously accepted most of the workers’ demands but resisted recognizing the external union. The resolution of this issue remains pending ¹ ².
