Streaming giant Netflix is under investigation in India for alleged visa violations, racial discrimination, and tax evasion. According to a government email, the investigation focuses on Netflix’s business practices in India, a crucial growth market.
The probe was triggered by a lawsuit filed by Nandini Mehta, Netflix’s former director of business and legal affairs for India. Mehta alleges wrongful termination, racial and gender discrimination, which Netflix denies. She welcomed the investigation, hoping the findings would be made public.
Netflix has faced increasing scrutiny in India, with controversies over content deemed insensitive by some viewers and government officials. The company has invested heavily in local content production, featuring Bollywood stars. Additionally, Netflix is challenging a tax demand from the Indian government since 2023.
The investigation’s scope and involved agencies remain unclear. The Foreigners Regional Registration Office (FRRO), responsible for monitoring foreigners’ visa compliance, is leading the probe.
