NASA has prepared an emergency plan for astronauts Sunita Williams and Butch Wilmore’s evacuation from the International Space Station (ISS). In case of an emergency, the astronauts will use temporary seats with straps in the Crew Dragon cargo area. These seats have been configured using items from the space station and allow the astronauts to sit with their knees bent and feet in the proper position.
NASA commercial crew manager Steve Stitch explained that the crew has practiced hand signals for communication and tested airflow in the area to ensure proper ventilation. The landing and parachute events have also been analyzed to ensure the loads on the astronauts’ bodies are within acceptable limits.
The astronauts are currently participating in experiments and following a standard exercise regimen during their stay at the ISS. They will return to Earth in February 2025, but the emergency plan is in place in case of an unexpected evacuation.
