NASA has shared haunting images of the 9/11 World Trade Center attack taken from space by astronaut Frank Culbertson. On September 11, 2001, Culbertson witnessed the smoke rising from the Twin Towers from his position on the International Space Station. He captured a chilling image of the event, showing a massive plume of smoke streaming southward from Ground Zero.
Culbertson was the only American off the planet at the time of the attacks and documented the unfolding disaster from his vantage point. NASA also played a role in responding to the attacks, working with FEMA to monitor air quality in New York and providing satellite resources for recovery efforts.
The agency has also honored the victims of 9/11 in various ways, including flying flags in space and creating a permanent memorial on Mars. The National 9/11 Flag, restored with contributions from across the country, is now part of the collection at the National September 11 Memorial Museum.
