Jupiter Life Line to Invest Rs 1,400 Crore to Double Capacity in Maharashtra by 2029

  • Jupiter Life Line plans Rs 1,400-crore hospital expansion in Maharashtra, adding 1,400 new beds.

  • The hospital chain will build three new hospitals in Dombivli, Mira-Bhayandar, and Pune, targeting 2,500 total beds by 2029.

  • Jupiter Life Line follows a greenfield, long-term expansion strategy focusing on underserved urban areas.

Jupiter Life Line: Aggressive Hospital Expansion Across Maharashtra

Jupiter Life Line Hospitals is investing Rs 1,400 crore in Maharashtra to expand its capacity from 1,061 beds to 2,500 beds over the next four years. The expansion includes three new hospitals: Dombivli and Mira-Bhayandar in Thane and Bibwewadi in Pune.

The CEO, Dr. Ankit Thakker, told Moneycontrol that the Dombivli project, which costs Rs 500 crore, is halfway complete. The facility will cover 8 lakh square feet and is expected to start operations with 200–250 beds by Q1FY27. This will be the largest facility for the chain.

Hospital Expansion: Phased Growth for Better Operations

The hospital expansion plan at Jupiter Life Line will be executed in phases to avoid operational challenges and financial strain. After Dombivli, the Pune hospital will begin construction in Q3FY26, with a 500-bed capacity. The Mira-Bhayandar hospital, awaiting regulatory approvals, is expected to be operational by 2029.

Combined, these three facilities will add 1,300–1,400 beds, supporting Jupiter’s strategy of providing high-quality specialist care in urban areas that currently lack large quaternary hospitals. Patients in these regions often travel to Mumbai for advanced treatments.

Jupiter Life Line: Contrarian Greenfield Strategy

Unlike many hospital chains that follow asset-light or acquisition-heavy models, Jupiter Life Line focuses on greenfield, long-term projects. Dr. Thakker explained that this approach allows full control over location, design, technology, staffing, and culture, ensuring high quality and operational efficiency.

While typical private equity-backed chains prefer acquisitions or leased facilities for faster returns, Jupiter prioritizes sustainable growth. The hospital chain avoids mega-hospitals or very small ones, instead opting for 300–500 bed facilities optimized for a 45-minute catchment area.

Hospital Expansion: Existing Facilities and Revenue Growth

Along with new projects, Jupiter Life Line plans incremental expansion of its existing hospitals in Thane, Pune, and Indore. For example, Indore hospital will add more beds once occupancy crosses 60–65 percent. This year, 80–90 beds were added in Indore, and additional expansion could bring total capacity across the network to 1,200 beds.

The hospital chain reported Q1FY26 revenue of Rs 347.6 crore, up 20.5% YoY, with EBITDA of Rs 78.1 crore (22.5% margin). Profit after tax slightly declined by 1.6% to Rs 43.9 crore due to higher depreciation and finance costs from recent capex.

Jupiter Life Line: Funding Strategy and Financial Health

Funding for hospital expansion will primarily come from internal accruals and debt. The company remains net cash positive, with Rs 600 crore in cash and Rs 325 crore in debt, providing flexibility for Phase-2 projects.

Dr. Thakker clarified that there is no immediate plan for equity raise, but the company may consider raising capital in the future for additional projects or strategic acquisitions. This approach ensures that expansion remains sustainable and asset-efficient, minimizing operational dilution.

Jupiter Life Line: Focus on Hyperlocal Healthcare

The hospital chain emphasizes hyperlocal care, building hospitals in underserved, densely populated areas to ensure high bed utilization and better returns. According to Dr. Thakker, healthcare is not a mass service; strategically placed 300–500 bed hospitals serve local populations better than large 1,000-bed facilities.

The focus on local healthcare ensures that patients do not need to travel long distances for specialist care, replicating Jupiter’s success in Thane, where its flagship hospital has become a landmark facility.
