The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) has announced that the first test flight of its Gaganyaan human-rated rocket is scheduled for December 2024. This marks a significant milestone in India’s ambitious human space mission. The three stages of the Gaganyaan rocket have arrived at the Satish Dhawan Space Centre, and the integration of the crew module is underway at the Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre.
ISRO Chairman S. Somanath confirmed that all systems for the G1 rocket are expected to reach the launch centre by November, with the test flight targeted for December. This development comes after the successful launch of the SSLV-D3 mission, which paved the way for the commercial production of the Small Satellite Launch Vehicle (SSLV).
ISRO is also committed to transferring the SSLV technology to private companies, enabling them to produce rockets. The selection process for the industry partner or consortium is currently underway, and ISRO estimates that it will take approximately two years for the selected entity to learn the technology and begin producing SSLVs.
