Instagram is testing a new feature that lets users share their location and post updates on a shared map. This feature is similar to Snap Maps, but with stricter privacy controls. Users can choose to share their location with a specific group of friends, such as “Close Friends” or followers they follow back.
The feature is currently being tested in a few markets and is opt-in, meaning users have to choose to use it. Instagram says it’s building the feature with safety in mind, but some people are worried about the potential for broader location sharing and privacy concerns.
This isn’t Instagram’s first try at location-based features. In 2012, it launched a private photo map, but it was discontinued in 2016 due to low usage. If this new feature is rolled out widely, it could change how users interact with location-based content and raise new privacy concerns.
