Supreme Court of India uses AI for language translation and legal access

  • Supreme Court of India uses AI for language translation and legal access
  • AI translates judicial documents, improves legal research, and automates processes
  • Initiative aims to increase access to justice and make legal information available in regional languages

The Supreme Court of India has embraced Artificial Intelligence (AI) to enhance language translation and legal access. Since February 2023, AI has been used to transcribe oral arguments and translate key judgments into vernacular languages. A dedicated committee oversees this initiative, which aims to increase access to justice and make legal information more widely available.
The AI-powered translation project has already achieved significant results, with 36,271 Supreme Court judgments translated into Hindi and 17,142 judgments translated into 16 other regional languages. These translations are accessible on the e-SCR portal. The initiative has made notable progress without dedicated funding, demonstrating the potential of AI to improve legal access and language translation.
The project’s success has encouraged High Courts to launch e-High Court Reports (e-HCR), containing translated judgments, and to request state governments to translate legislation, rules, and regulations into regional languages. This collaborative effort aims to make legal information more accessible and promote access to justice.
