Google has acquired the large language model technology of , a startup that raised $193 million in venture capital. The deal grants Google a non-exclusive license to use’s technology, which will be used to improve Google’s AI capabilities.
As part of the deal,  co-founders Noam Shazeer and Daniel De Freitas will rejoin Google, where they previously worked. Shazeer will join Google DeepMind’s research team, along with a small number of his colleagues.  will also receive additional funding from Google, although the amount was not disclosed.
This deal is similar to others made by tech giants Microsoft and Amazon, who have also acquired AI startups to bolster their AI capabilities. The deals are being scrutinized by regulators, who are concerned about the impact on competition and innovation in the AI industry.
