Foxconn, a leading electronics manufacturer, is set to invest $1 billion in Tamil Nadu to establish a smartphone display module facility. This marks the company’s first display module unit in India and will primarily support Apple’s iPhone production.
The facility, spread over 500,000 square feet in Oragadam, near Chennai, will help India climb the value chain in electronics manufacturing. According to industry experts, assembling displays locally could add 2-3% value to the production process in India. This move is part of Foxconn’s expansion plans in India, which include exploring opportunities in electric vehicles, batteries, and semiconductors.
By setting up local assembly units, India can reduce supply chain delays and costs, benefiting brands by shortening delivery times. Currently, India relies heavily on imports from China and South Korea for display modules. However, challenges remain in sourcing components and building a skilled workforce in advanced display technology.
Foxconn’s investment aligns with Apple’s strategy to diversify its production base and reduce dependence on China. This development is expected to boost India’s electronics manufacturing sector and create new opportunities for growth.
