Ernst & Young (EY) has responded to the tragic death of its 26-year-old employee, Anna Sebastian Perayil, who died due to “overwhelming workload” just four months into her job at the company’s Pune office. Anna’s mother, Anita Augustine, claimed that her daughter was subjected to excessive workload, leading to physical, mental, and emotional health issues.
In a statement, EY expressed deep sadness over Anna’s passing and offered condolences to the family. The company acknowledged receiving Anita’s letter and assured that they are taking it seriously. EY emphasized its commitment to employee well-being, stating that they “place the highest importance on the well-being of all employees” and will continue to improve workplace conditions.
Anita Augustine’s letter to EY India Chairman Rajiv Memani highlighted the stark contrast between the company’s human rights values and the reality her daughter faced. She described how Anna worked late nights and weekends, taking on verbal tasks beyond her official workload, and suffered from anxiety, sleep disturbances, and stress.
EY has provided assistance to the family and promised to continue supporting them during this difficult time. The incident raises concerns about workplace stress, overwork, and corporate responsibility for employee well-being.
