Elon Musk has reignited his legal battle against OpenAI, the company he co-founded in 2015, and its CEO Sam Altman. In a new lawsuit, Musk accuses OpenAI of prioritizing profits over the public good, alleging that the company’s direction was changed to focus on financial gain after its technology began to significantly impact generative AI.
This is not the first time Musk has challenged OpenAI’s trajectory. He previously filed a lawsuit in February, claiming that OpenAI had strayed from its original mission to develop AI for the benefit of humanity. However, that lawsuit was withdrawn in June without explanation.
Musk’s latest lawsuit seeks to invalidate OpenAI’s licensing agreement with Microsoft, which allows the tech giant to use OpenAI’s language models. Musk contends that this licence is beyond the scope of their partnership, which has seen Microsoft invest billions of dollars into OpenAI. The lawsuit reflects Musk’s ongoing concerns about the ethical and commercial implications of AI development.
