Donald Trump, the Republican presidential candidate, has expressed interest in appointing Elon Musk to a cabinet or advisory role in his administration. Trump praised Musk as a “very smart guy” and a “brilliant” individual. This comes after Musk publicly endorsed Trump in the upcoming presidential race.
However, Trump’s plans for electric vehicles (EVs) may not align with Musk’s interests. Trump is considering ending the $7,500 tax credit for EV purchases, which could impact Tesla’s demand. Additionally, Trump plans to roll back regulations requiring automakers to produce more EVs and plug-in hybrids. Trump argues that the market for EVs may remain limited due to their high costs and issues with battery range.
Trump’s automotive policy plans also include imposing new tariffs on vehicles produced in Mexico by American automakers. He believes this would push companies to manufacture more cars within the United States. Trump also criticized Google, describing the tech giant as operating “almost like the Wild West.”
