The Digital Competition Bill, which seeks to regulate anti-competitive behaviour by big tech firms, is taking longer to finalize than expected. Despite receiving comments from stakeholders, more discussions are needed before the Bill can be finalized.
The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology is holding meetings with tech firms and industry bodies, and their comments are still awaited. Once these consultations are complete, a fresh draft will be prepared, followed by interministerial consultations and approval from the Union Cabinet.
The Bill’s finalization is a lengthy process, but it remains a priority for the government. The appointment of a new secretary in the Ministry of Corporate Affairs may also impact the timeline.
