CrowdStrike, a leading cybersecurity firm, has issued a preliminary report taking responsibility for the global Microsoft outage that occurred on July 19, 2024. The outage, which was caused by a faulty update to CrowdStrike’s Rapid Response Content, brought airlines, banks, and retailers to a standstill.
According to CrowdStrike, the error originated from a Rapid Response Content update that bypassed the company’s quality control checks due to a bug in the Content Validator. This resulted in the deployment of problematic content, ultimately causing a system crash on affected Windows machines.
CrowdStrike has outlined several steps to prevent similar incidents in the future, including enhanced software testing, improved validation, and phased rollout of updates. The company has also committed to releasing a full Root Cause Analysis to the public once their investigation is complete.
