Bill Gates, co-founder of Microsoft, has a unique way of raising awareness about the fight against malaria. In his latest Instagram video, he smashes Lego mosquitoes, symbolizing his goal to “smash” diseases like malaria, polio, and guinea worm.
Gates supports innovative technologies like VectorCam, an app developed by Johns Hopkins University, which identifies mosquito species using computer vision. This app can determine if a mosquito is female and if it has recently fed on blood, crucial information for targeting and controlling the spread of malaria.
In addition to VectorCam, Gates mentions another tool in development, HumBug, which identifies mosquito species by the sound of their wing beats using a smartphone’s microphone. While still in early stages, it shows promise in enhancing mosquito surveillance. Gates emphasizes the importance of accurate mosquito identification and continued investment in global health efforts to eradicate diseases like malaria.
