Quick reporting to the cybercrime department can help recover stolen money, as seen in a similar incident in Chennai.
Bhargavi Mani, a passenger at Bengaluru International Airport, recently fell victim to a scam. She attempted to access an airport lounge and was asked by staff to download an app and complete a facial scan. Unbeknownst to her, this was a scam that allowed the scammers to access her phone and credit card information.
Ms. Mani discovered that ₹87,000 had been withdrawn from her credit card and transferred to a PhonePay account. She reported the incident to the cybercrime department and informed her bank, blocking her card. The airport authorities have also contacted her and are assisting in resolving the issue.
This incident highlights the importance of being cautious when sharing personal information, especially financial details. In another incident in Chennai, a businessman nearly lost ₹2 crore to an email scam. However, quick reporting to the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal enabled the recovery of the stolen money.
To protect yourself from such scams, always verify payment requests and double-check emails, especially when large sums are involved. If you suspect you’ve been scammed, report it immediately to the Cyber Crime Helpline at 1930 or file a complaint at www.cybercrime.gov.in
