NASA astronaut Sunita Williams recently celebrated her 59th birthday in space, her second birthday away from Earth. The special day coincided with “International Talk Like a Pirate Day,” and Williams got into the spirit by wearing a pirate eye patch.
Williams, currently stranded on the ISS since June due to a faulty propulsion system, made the most of her birthday. She baked a strawberry cake, which she shared with her crewmates in the Unity module. The cake was secured with tape and velcro to prevent it from floating away in the microgravity environment.
As the new commander of the ISS, Williams has taken on additional responsibilities. She and fellow astronaut Butch Wilmore have been resourceful, even making pizza and ice cream desserts in space. Despite limited food options, the crew has found ways to make mealtime enjoyable.
Williams’ birthday celebration is a testament to the resilience and adaptability of astronauts in space. With a return journey scheduled for February 2025, Williams will continue to lead the ISS Expedition 71 crew.
